DIGITAL SHORT
"Freedom"

DIRECTED + EDITED BY: JACOB WOLSTENCROFT
SAM: JULIA ULLRICH
KELLY: OLIVIA VALLI
Samantha Brown balances on the edge of her future, car keys in hand. As she sits in the driver's seat, she faces a choice: will she follow in her mother's footsteps, take the dare of her impetuous best friend and chart a new path?
Created during the COVID-19 pandemic in October of 2020, this short film is of a section from the musical THE MAD ONES, comprising the song "Freedom". It was developed as a part of the 2020 THE MAD ONES Virtual Lab and was made possible through a new digital licensing agreement with Concord Theatricals. The Lab spanned 11 time zones, bringing together over 200 theatre-makers from across the globe, and created 78 digital shorts which launched THE MAD ONES Engine.
The Engine is a web platform designed to create seamless, randomized versions of the entire musical using all the short videos submitted by participants in the Lab. Each time you start the Engine, a new version of the show plays.

Each episode centres around a tattoo image and delves into the lives of different people who all have some form of that same tattoo, celebrating the differences and diversity of their stories that brought them to getting "inked". Linked by INK is being funded for an initial five-episode release by the Canada Arts Council and their Digital Originals micro-innovation grants.

The cast and team behind The Louder We Get at Theatre Calgary got together to create this performance in isolation to celebrate PRIDE and in dedication to all the students who missed their prom and graduations in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This video is also a fundraiser for two charities that were chosen by the company in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
